Two Months Into My New Life... Update!
It has been a pretty crazy start to a new school year, which has been pretty much a norm in my life throughout my undergrad education. This past September I started a brand new program at Centennial College called Digital Engagement Strategy. This program is designed to train and educate a small group of individuals, of varying educational backgrounds, with the fundamentals and skills needed in the ever-growing Digital Marketing Industry.
Before I give an update on my thoughts so far, I want to just tell you how I made a switch from studying Sciences to a completely different industry - Marketing. Coming out of high school, my ultimate career goal was to go to Medical School, however as my undergraduate career progressed I learned more about other potential options. I eventually discovered that Medical School may not have been the perfect fit for me. With this realization, I had to do further research for what the next options for a student with a Bachelor of Science. And it seemed there were very few job options and continuing my education with a Masters program was basically a necessity. One thing I knew for sure was I didn't want to spend another 2 years doing research as this wasn't something I particularly enjoyed doing. The more time I spent weighing my options, the more it became clear that perhaps a career change would be good for me.
When my convocation date was fast approaching, I was dreading having to explain why I changed my mind from pursuing Medical School. And why I didn't want to continue in the Science pathway. Because in all honesty, I still had no clue what I was going to do. At that moment in time I felt like I had wasted 4 years and that I failed. It seemed that everyone I knew had huge plans set for their future and they were so sure of everything they wanted to do.
I have always been a person who planned everything. I planned what readings I would do that day. When and how much time I would dedicate to complete an assignment or to study for a test. My life was was a list of time blocks from the time I woke up until the time I went back to sleep. So having this uncertainty of not knowing what was next for me was extremely scary and daunting. Over the summer though I was surprised that there were actually quite a few people that were in the same situation. There were so many that had a Bachelors degree under their belt, but didn't know what to do with it. At that moment I found myself able to breathe and took that relief to find something that was best for me.
My main goal was to find a career that fit my personality and would be something I would enjoy doing day in and day out. Don't get me wrong, I most definitely enjoyed learning all things science. But one thing that was missing for me was the ability to be creative. I found that being in a Science degree, a lot of my education was very procedural. So I began making lists and planning on my options.
This past summer I found an institution called BrainStation that offered a wide range of tech courses, which was something that intrigued me. I took an Introduction to Web Development course and an Introduction to Digital Marketing course. About halfway through both courses I figured out that Marketing could potentially be a good career choice for me to pursue. From there I found a program at a college that I felt would prepare me for the industry and offered the option to enrol in a co-op program.
So my thoughts... Everyday I am introduced to new topics and concepts within the digital world that I had no idea existed. There are so many things that I would see on a daily basis and not even acknowledge or realize existed. I am still trying to learn all the new language that Marketers use on a daily, but I can't wait to see where this takes me.
