Megs Travels: Jamaica Edition

Happy New Year! I’m back and ready to go full swing with blog posts for everyone to read and enjoy! A little update about school: due to the Ontario College strike that interrupted my last semester, I actually only just finished my first semester last week. So I am just starting my second semester and it seems like there will be a lot of fun hands on projects with companies found here in Toronto!

To kick off my first blog post of 2018, I’m introducing a new blog series called Megs Travels. For as long as I can remember, my family has gone travelling somewhere new at least once a year and usually somewhere hot. Living in Canada, it is always so nice to get away from the bitter cold weather and go to a beach. This winter in Toronto has been one of the coldest and snowiest and iciest winters in probably the last 5 years. So you can say that I was so excited to get away to warmer weather for a week with my family!

This Christmas holiday my family travelled to Jamaica and I am here to share my adventures! My absolute favourite thing to do when I go away is to sit on the beach with a book or just nap in the sun.

But my brother and I always try to go on some sort of expedition to explore the city we are in. We always push each other to try something new. My brother has always wanted to go scuba diving so a couple years ago we got our open water diving certification. On the other hand, I love roller coasters and my brother used to be afraid of heights. So our first attempt to get him over that fear was zip lining and let me just say he absolutely LOVES zip lining. So for our Jamaican adventure we decided to go zip lining through the mountains.

We went on the Mystic Mountain adventure with a side trip to Dunn’s River Falls. Our first pit stop was to climb up the Dunn’s River Falls, which is in Ocho Rios. We climbed up over 600ft to get to the top of the falls. And let me tell you it was not an easy climb and for someone like me who can’t walk without falling on flat surface this was a huge challenge. Climbing up this falls made me really wish I had my camera on me because it was one of the coolest experiences I’ve had. I could also see when having a GoPro would really come in handy here.

From the falls, we went to Mystic Mountain where we were going to ride up a 15 minute chairlift to the top of a mountain, bobsled and zip line! It was kind of odd riding up a chairlift to scale a mountain NOT covered in snow, but nevertheless the view was amazing!

The bobsled ride was built because of the Jamaican Olympic Bob Sled Team that first competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. This ride, driven by gravity, is completely controlled by the rider and we were able to control how fast we went down the mountainside. And lets just say with me at the wheel, my brother was in for a fast trip down the mountain!

And finally to get back down Mystic Mountain, we zip lined our way down! I absolutely LOVE zip lining. Something about flying down a mountain at full speed just thrills me. And I love the fact that my brother loves zip lining now, which makes it an easy brother sister bonding moment.

Overall I had a blast spending time with my family in Jamaica! I actually really enjoy that I now have this blog so that I can share with all of you the photos that I get to take when I'm traveling. 99% of the time you will find me behind the camera and never in front of it... I just love being able to capture everything around me.

Check back for lots of more content for this new year. All things baking, Toronto exploration and who knows what else I decide to write about! Thanks for reading and come back for more of a Glimpse of Meagan's Journey!
