Megs Rediscovers Toronto: School Field Trip Edition

FieldTrip.jpg

I am super excited to be starting this blog series where I get to share my adventures through my own city of Toronto! I have lived in Toronto for 15 years and I think I’ve done a pretty good job at getting to know my own city however, I am constantly reading about the hidden gems of this city. I think the reason sometimes I feel like a tourist in my own city is because I’ve never explored the city on my own. Any of the landmarks of my city that I have gone to see was because of school tip or because I had family visiting from out of town. So I’ve decided that now that I’m much older it is time for me to discover the city I call home!

For today’s edition of my Megs Rediscovers Toronto, I’m going back in time and exploring the parts in the city that I went to for field trips in elementary and middle school. And my first stop was to St. Lawrence Market. The Market was just as I remembered through the eyes of a Grade 3 girl. There were stands upon stands of all the fruits and vegetables you could imagine. But thing that was a pleasant surprise was the whole floor dedicated for so many different cultures. It was just so fitting to see how it reflects the city this Market is located in.

If you decide you want to explore St. Lawrence Market I have one major piece of advice for you, don’t go there HUNGRY! I mean I can never say no to fresh fruit (you can ask my friends, they have probably never not seen me without an apple or grapes in my lunch). But my mouth watered when I smelled freshly baked bread. As a baker my nose can just pinpoint places with almost anything freshly baked. One of the things on my baking bucket list is focaccia bread.

I decided to go to St. Lawrence Market because people rave about the vast amount of food they have. But my highlight of my expedition was just as I was leaving the Market. I got to see the Market putting up their Christmas snowflake decorations all along the front of the building. I may just have to go back in the upcoming weeks to check out the finished display!

Now onto stop number 2 of Megs Rediscovers Toronto expedition… off to the Evergreen Brickworks. And for this trip I decided it was only fitting to bring along an exploration buddy, my best friend from middle school. As we stepped out of the car, the first thing my nose lead me to was the smell of freshly chopped Christmas trees. Now I don’t think that i have an absolute favorite thing about Christmas because I could never pick a single thing. But… the smell of pine trees has to be one of my top favorites! I lived away from home during university, but I would always make my way home for the first weekend of December. I would never miss going with my parents to buy the perfect tree and then to decorate it.

Literally since the first day of fall I have been dying to get that Instagrammable photo of the fall leaves colors, but I never know where to go. As I walked the trails of the Brickworks and made my way up the hill I found the PERFECT view of the trees.

I spent the morning going up and down, left and right through the winding trails. I’m pretty sure we ended up walking in circles, but I’ve never minded getting a little lost. Other than getting slightly lost, we decided to channel our inner students and tried some of the nature activities the Brickworks put out. One thing I learned, I was NOT destined to be a leaf identifier. But I mean kind of already knew that but my little trip was able to confirm that for me.

However I actually did learn something from this mini-trip. We actually saw a tree chewed down to its core and did you know a beaver can chew down a tree in the matter of minutes?!

I actually had so much fun on my mini-adventures and literally right after visiting the Brickworks I was planning where I should go next. I have definitely taken for granted this amazing city that I live in. And I, Meagan, vow to take the time to explore the city I call home. So for my next Megs Rediscovers Toronto edition, I’ll be hunting for all of the best decorations in the city.

Can’t wait for you all to join me on all my future adventures! Until next time, don’t forget to come back for more of a Glimpse of Meagan’s Life!
